BOOKS

Robert Sapolsky: Behave, London 2017

This might be one of the most comprehensive books about how and why human behave the way they do – especially with regards to aggression. Its approach is highly original, the writing just brilliant and the insights are endless. This is really a read-before-you-die-book. Though the first part on the working of the brain are quite a tough read. But do stay tuned!

Kim Scott: Radical Candor, New York 2017

As a high ranking manager at Apple and Google, Kim Scott learned and taught how to lead people. In this book, her focus lays on giving feedback and communicating in a team. We find her tools and methods much more applicable to the workplace than the classical „non-violent communication“. The book boasts of stories and examples and is a extremely instructive read.

Daniel Kahnemann: Thinking, Fast and Slow, New York 2011

In this seminal book about cognitive biases, Daniel Kahnemann differentiates between two fundamental systems of thinking. He focuses on the fast, intuitive one which is prone to systematic mistakes like anchoring, sunk-cost-fallacy or overconfidence. This book is the most thorough and a highly entertaining introduction into mental shortcuts and the failings of intuition.

Tony Schwartz: The Way We’re Working isn’t Working, New York 2010

This book examines the importance of managing our physical, mental, emotional and – as Schwartz somewhat misleadingly calls it – spiritual energies to become more productive and satisfied at work. The Way We’re Working isn’t Working is a major inspiration for Berlin Alley’s own TNL-Approach and a highly recommended read.

Frederic Laloux argues that the way we used to organize work needs to be reinvented. He examines the organization of twelve companies which are as successful as their employees are happy. Their secret lies, among others, in a human-centered approach and a less formal authority.
